Stump gone. Yard back.
Below-grade stump removal with cleanup that lets you replant, sod, or pour concrete without surprises.
Different stumps, different plans.
Not every stump needs the same approach. We size the grind to what you're going to do with the spot after.
-
Standard grind (4–6 inches below grade)
Right for most yards — leaves a clean planting bed or a spot for sod with minimal disturbance.
-
Deep grind (12+ inches)
When you're planning to replant a tree in the same spot, pour concrete, or run buried utilities through.
-
Tight-access work
36" gates, fenced yards, slopes — our smallest grinder fits through standard gates without dismantling fence panels.
-
Multi-stump jobs
Property clean-outs and orchard removals. We give per-stump volume pricing on jobs with 5+ stumps.
Our grind-day process.
- 01
Utility locates
We call 811 (Digline) before every grind. Critical when grinding deeper than 6 inches or near property lines.
- 02
Site prep
Plywood walkways across lawns, tarps to contain chips, and a clear plan for where the spoils will end up.
- 03
The grind
Self-propelled grinders for tight access, tracked machines for the big stuff. We grind to the depth your end-use requires.
- 04
Cleanup & finish
Spoils raked out and either hauled, mounded for backfill, or spread as mulch — your call. Surrounding turf gets a careful sweep.
Stump Grinding — FAQs
Can't I just leave the stump?
You can — but stumps attract carpenter ants and termites, sprout new growth from the root flare, and decay slowly over years. If you want to mow over the spot, plant in it, or just have it look intentional, grinding is the move.
What about the roots?
Grinding removes the stump and the main lateral roots within the cutting wheel's reach — typically a 4-foot radius. Deeper, more distant roots are left to decompose naturally, which doesn't cause issues for most landscaping.
Can you grind under a fence or near a sprinkler line?
Sometimes. We always call utility locates first. Anything closer than 18 inches to a fence post, sprinkler head, or known utility line gets discussed before we start. We'd rather adjust the plan than damage something.
How much chip waste does grinding produce?
Roughly 2–3x the volume of the original stump. A 24-inch stump might produce a wheelbarrow's worth of fine chips. You can keep them as mulch, mound them in place to backfill, or we'll haul them off for a small fee.
